Vietnam ranks among top 7 globally for IPv6 adoption

Vietnam has achieved a significant milestone in internet infrastructure, securing a spot among the top seven countries worldwide and second in ASEAN for IPv6 adoption. This progress has garnered positive feedback from international internet organizations. The VNNIC Internet Conference 2026, held in Ho Chi Minh City, focused on the theme "Transition to IPv6-Only - Implementation Solutions According to the National Roadmap."

Pham Duc Long, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, highlighted IPv6-Only as an inevitable trend for the next-generation internet. He stressed that IPv6 not only addresses the depletion of internet addresses but also unlocks new development avenues for the digital economy. With its capacity for large-scale direct connections, simplified network architecture, enhanced operational efficiency, and improved security, IPv6-Only is poised to become the foundational internet infrastructure for the era of AI, Cloud, IoT, 5G/6G, and industrial internet.

Nguyen Truong Giang, acting Director of the Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC), reported that after more than a decade of promoting IPv6, Vietnam's adoption rate reached nearly 70% in 2025, surpassing the global average by 1.6 times. Approximately 95 million broadband internet subscribers are now actively using IPv6. Furthermore, 86% of ministries, sectors, and localities have updated their official portals and public service gateways to IPv6, with about 73% of agencies planning their networks to use independent IP addresses and network identifiers.

International experts at the conference shared their experiences in implementing IPv6-Only and discussed building internet infrastructure to support AI and the digital economy. Tony Smith, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre, emphasized that large-scale transitions require synchronized participation from all stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, businesses, and the internet community. He noted that VNNIC's approach exemplifies this collaborative effort, offering valuable lessons for the global internet community.
