Vietnam's 'Hero Village' Honors Legacy of Sacrifice and Resilience

In the heart of Da Nang, Vietnam, lies Cẩm Sa village, a community that has transformed from a war-torn landscape into a place of profound pride and remembrance. Once referred to as 'Làng trắng', the White Village, due to the extensive damage from bombings, Cẩm Sa now embodies a spirit of resilience, with locals proudly stating, 'In my village, you meet a hero at every corner.'

The village's history is marked by extraordinary sacrifice. Cẩm Sa is home to over 500 fallen soldiers and more than 100 mothers honored with the title 'Vietnamese Heroic Mother.' These numbers, representing a small village, underscore the immense cost of the nation's struggle for independence. The region also produced five generals in the People's Army of Vietnam and the People's Public Security Forces, further cementing its legacy of bravery.

Amidst the peaceful, tree-lined streets and red-tiled roofs, a small memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the past. The monument honors seven soldiers and heroes from Điện Nam commune who perished in a brutal battle on January 19, 1972. Facing an entire enemy battalion equipped with tanks, aircraft, and artillery, these seven fighters held their ground from morning until late afternoon. They inflicted significant damage on the enemy, destroying a tank, damaging another, and shooting down a helicopter, all while making the ultimate sacrifice.

Locals like 72-year-old Phạm Ngọc Cước reflect on the significance of the memorial. "This monument was erected to honor these heroes and for future generations to learn from and continue the legacy of their ancestors," he shared. The story of these seven soldiers, who fought valiantly against overwhelming odds, is a testament to the village's enduring spirit and the deep, personal losses that shaped its identity.
