Vietnam's Lai Châu province seeks aid after devastating floods

Northern Vietnam is grappling with the devastating aftermath of severe natural disasters, primarily heavy rains and floods that have swept through provinces including Lào Cai, Lai Châu, Điện Biên, and Sơn La. As of July 19, the floods have resulted in at least five deaths, four disappearances, and ten injuries.

The damage extends to infrastructure and agriculture, with 28 houses completely destroyed, 307 damaged, and 122 requiring urgent relocation. Additionally, 191 homes were affected by inundation or landslides, and nearly 700 hectares of rice and other crops were lost. Significant landslides have also blocked key national and provincial roads, disrupting transportation.

Mường Than commune in Lai Châu province has borne the brunt of the disaster, recording four fatalities and four missing individuals from the flash flood on July 17. The local authorities have mobilized over 1,000 personnel and heavy machinery for search and rescue operations, and have evacuated 1,686 residents to safer locations.

Lai Châu province estimates its total losses at approximately 190 billion đồng (around $7.5 million USD). Due to the extensive damage and the province's limited budget for disaster relief, the local government has formally requested emergency assistance from the central government. This includes requests for rice supplies for affected households and financial aid totaling 116 billion đồng to support immediate recovery efforts.
