Vietnam-Singapore: A model of successful cooperation in ASEAN

Vietnamese President To Lam and a high-level delegation will undertake a state visit to Singapore from May 29 to 31, accepting an invitation from Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. During his visit, President Lam is also scheduled to attend and deliver a keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue on May 29, at the invitation of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

This visit underscores the strong and evolving relationship between Vietnam and Singapore, which is considered a model of successful cooperation within ASEAN. The two nations established a Strategic Partnership in 2013, which was upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025. This advancement reflects a high level of political trust, deepening mutual interests, and a shared strategic vision in the current global landscape.

Economic cooperation stands out as a significant pillar of the bilateral relationship. Singapore is one of Vietnam's most important economic partners and its second-largest foreign investor. With over 4,500 active projects and nearly $97 billion in registered capital, Singaporean investments span crucial sectors including manufacturing, infrastructure, logistics, real estate, finance, and high-tech services. These investments play a vital role in Vietnam's economic growth, job creation, and industrial restructuring.

A prime example of successful bilateral cooperation is the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) system, which has been developed across numerous Vietnamese provinces. In the new phase of development, VSIPs are transitioning towards greener, smarter, and more high-tech models, emphasizing sustainable development.
