Vietnamese and Myanmar First Ladies Visit Van Phuc Silk Village

Ngô Phương Ly and Kyu Kyu Hla visited Hanoi’s Van Phuc silk village on Sept. 5, bringing a cultural stop to Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to Vietnam.

Ngô Phương Ly said Vietnam and Myanmar are both known for traditional crafts, particularly silk weaving. Women in both countries, she said, create refined silk products while preserving cultural traditions across generations.

She also highlighted the exchange of ideas between the two countries. Myanmar’s lotus silk, she noted, has been introduced in Vietnam, where lotus flowers grow across the country, and has been used to make áo dài that celebrate Vietnamese women’s beauty.

The women of the two countries not only skillfully create refined silk fabrics, but also preserve and pass on enduring cultural beauty over time.

The two first ladies tried threading silk beads and observed a loom. They also viewed silk products and the Ô ăn quan board game at Vụn Art, described as a distinctive circular and socially focused cooperative in the capital. The workshop produces artistic handicrafts from recycled silk, and most of its tailors and workers are people with disabilities.

Kyu Kyu Hla expressed a wish for more opportunities to exchange views with Ngô Phương Ly and share the cultural traditions of their two countries.
