Vietnamese football star Lê Công Vinh heads to Japan for A-level coaching course

Vietnamese football icon Lê Công Vinh has embarked on a journey to Japan to pursue an A-level coaching license, a move signaling his commitment to advancing his career in football management.

Vinh, a celebrated former striker for the Vietnamese national team, arrived in Japan on June 13, 2026, to begin the intensive course organized jointly by the Japan Football Association (JFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The program is structured into three distinct phases, with the first week-long session commencing on June 14, followed by further modules in August and December.

While A-level coaching courses are available in Vietnam, Vinh expressed a desire to study in Japan, citing the program's superior curriculum and the opportunity to learn from three instructors. He also highlighted the benefit of networking with 23 other participants, aiming to absorb the latest knowledge and expand his professional connections. "I want to learn the newest knowledge, get acquainted with the remaining 23 trainees to expand my relationships and learn," Vinh stated.

Despite the higher financial investment required for the Japanese course compared to domestic options, the 41-year-old former player views it as a crucial investment in his future. Vinh previously played abroad for Portuguese club Leixoes and Japan's Consadole Sapporo, and won the Vietnamese Golden Ball award three times. After retiring, he briefly served as acting president of Ho Chi Minh City FC before focusing on coaching education.
