Vietnamese gymnast wins gold at world cup

Vietnamese gymnast Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu has achieved a historic milestone, securing a gold medal in the vault event at the 2026 FIG World Challenge Cup held in Uzbekistan. Nhu's winning score of 13.175 points placed her ahead of strong international competitors, marking a significant moment for Vietnamese gymnastics on the world stage.

This victory represents the first-ever world-level gold medal for Vietnamese gymnastics. It builds upon Nhu's previous success, including a gold medal at the 2025 Asian Championships, which was the first time in 13 years that Vietnamese women's gymnastics had claimed the top spot in the continent.

Nhu, born in Ho Chi Minh City in 1998, has steadily progressed in her career. She earned a silver medal at the 2021 SEA Games on home soil in both the team and individual vault events. The World Challenge Cup gold medal is now the highest achievement in her competitive career.

The Vietnamese gymnastics team, comprising five athletes including Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien, Vu Tien Anh, and Nguyen Phuoc Hai, is competing in the Uzbekistan event from May 21-24. This tournament serves as their inaugural international competition of 2026. Last year's Bulgarian World Challenge Cup saw Khanh Phong win a silver medal in the rings, and Xuan Thien secure a gold in the pommel horse.
