Villa Gesell: Investigation into toddler's death currently shows no grounds to accuse mother

Judicial authorities in Mar del Plata are investigating the death of a two-year-old girl who was brought to the Municipal Hospital of Villa Gesell with severe respiratory distress, ultimately succumbing to her condition. The case has drawn significant attention due to the mother's history of losing two other young children to similar respiratory ailments.

The prosecutor's office in Pinamar has opened a case to determine the cause of death. A preliminary autopsy revealed that the child died from obstructive asphyxiation, with no indications of trauma. This finding, in principle, appears to rule out foul play by third parties. However, the forensic report is not yet conclusive, and the prosecutor has requested the body be held under judicial custody pending further details.

This is not the first time the family has faced such tragedy. The mother and the father of her previous children were previously detained over a decade ago on suspicion of abuse and the subsequent death of one of their children. They were later acquitted in a trial in Mar del Plata. Judicial sources indicate that another child, just six months old, had died years prior from what was described as a respiratory complication.

The deceased toddler has a four-year-old brother. Given the ongoing judicial investigation and the family's history, local child welfare authorities have intervened to assess the well-being of the surviving child. As of now, neither the 42-year-old mother nor her 53-year-old partner, who is the father of both young children, have faced any judicial measures. They have, however, been notified of the open criminal investigation, which will shape their future circumstances.
