Vilnius crash: 19-year-old driver charged after two die

A tragic car accident in Vilnius has resulted in the deaths of two young passengers, with the 19-year-old driver now facing charges. The driver, suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol, lost control of a BMW vehicle, which subsequently collided with a lamppost and burst into flames.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning on Žirmūnų Street. Police reported that the BMW veered off the road and struck the lamppost. Emergency services, including police, medics, and firefighters, responded to the scene. Tragically, medics were unable to save the two passengers, a girl born in 2007 and a boy born in 2005. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

An investigation has been launched under Article 281, Part 6 of the Criminal Code, concerning violations of road traffic safety or vehicle operation rules. If found to have been intoxicated, the driver faces a prison sentence of three to ten years. Prosecutors may refine the charges as the investigation progresses.

Video footage circulating online shows bystanders attempting to assist at the scene immediately after the crash. The footage also captured the young woman, believed to be the driver, walking around the damaged vehicle, appearing distressed. Social media discussions have intensified, with screenshots and videos circulating that allegedly show the 19-year-old driver living a luxurious lifestyle, featuring images with luxury cars and designer clothing, including the BMW involved in the fatal accident.
