Vilnius District Municipality Opens Service Centers After Storm

Following a powerful storm that left tens of thousands of residents in the Vilnius region without electricity and disrupted communication services, the Vilnius District Municipality has taken proactive steps to support its community. Local administrative units, known as seniūnijas, have been opened to provide essential services, allowing residents without power to charge their phones and access drinking water.

Residents who do not have electricity or water can come to the seniūnija today until 7 p.m. to charge their phones and fill up with water.

Jolanta Gulbinovič, head of the Communication Department at the Vilnius District Municipality Administration, stated that the decision to open these centers was a direct response to the storm's impact. "For a part of the residents of Vilnius district, the electricity supply was disrupted, and in some places, mobile communication, internet, or water supply were also disrupted. Therefore, the aim was to create conditions for residents to receive the most necessary help," she explained.

The initiative has been met with a positive response from residents. For example, in the Rudamina seniūnija, about 40 residents came to collect water, and another 20 used the facilities to charge their mobile phones and other devices. Similar numbers were reported in other seniūnijas, indicating a clear need for such support during the emergency.

While the Vilnius District Municipality is taking independent action, the Lithuanian Association of Municipalities noted that the matter of providing such support services has not yet been discussed at the association's level. Each municipality makes such decisions based on its specific circumstances. The Ministry of Energy acknowledged the Vilnius District Municipality's initiative, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between state institutions, local governments, and citizens during large-scale natural disasters or emergencies.

The decision on whether to apply such a practice is made by the specific municipality, taking into account all circumstances.

The storm has caused significant damage, with the Lithuanian Insurers Association reporting over 3 million euros in insured losses and more than 3,000 damage claims. As the recovery process continues, the municipality's efforts highlight the crucial role of local government in providing immediate relief and support to citizens during crises.

In the event of large-scale natural disasters or extreme situations, prompt elimination of consequences requires the focus and cooperation of all parties ensuring balance – the state, local government, and the residents themselves.
