Vilnius hospital delivers two exceptionally large babies, a rare event

Vilnius City Clinical Hospital welcomed two exceptionally large newborns, each weighing over five kilograms, a rarity in Lithuania. These macrosomic births, defined as over 4-4.5 kg, automatically elevate delivery to high-risk status, demanding immediate and precise medical decisions. Egidijus Jakiūnas, head of the Obstetrics Department, stressed that the focus shifts from setting records to ensuring the safety of mother and child.

When a newborn weighs more than five kilograms, no one in the delivery room thinks about records. They only think about safety and quick, correct decisions.

One mother, Agata, expressed surprise at her son's size, as prenatal ultrasounds only indicated he would be large. She credited the medical team and her husband's support for helping her feel secure throughout the process. The second mother also shared her delight at the unexpected, pleasant surprise of her son's substantial weight.

Macrosomia carries significant risks, including shoulder dystocia, prolonged labor, increased chances of newborn injury like clavicle fractures or nerve damage, and deeper birth canal tears. In some cases, an emergency Cesarean section becomes necessary. Jakiūnas noted that even advanced ultrasound technology can have a margin of error of 400-500 grams, underscoring the need for medical teams to be prepared for all scenarios.
