Vilnius incident: Woman frightened by man with pistol, husband also drew his gun

A woman walking her dogs in a Vilnius forest called her husband after becoming frightened by a man carrying a pistol. He rushed to the site and drew his own legally held firearm when the man approached him.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. in a forest near Bajorai, where the woman said she saw a man with a gun. Police were told that people might be shooting at bottles.

The husband, identified as Vidmantas, said he found a man and a woman at the location. He told Delfi that the man was speaking Russian and moving toward him with a pistol in his hand. He said he took the weapon from the man after about 15 seconds and called police.

Suddenly she called me frightened and said that someone was shooting in the forest

A shootout did not occur. Police determined that the weapon was an air pistol, and officers found neither ammunition nor bottles at the scene. The man, born in 1976, said he did not intend to harm anyone or create a danger and argued that such weapons did not require a permit.

Police told him that the forest is a public place and that firing even an air gun there is prohibited. Officers are investigating the circumstances.
