Vilnius waste plant dispute: Company plans lawsuit as municipality prepares larger claim

The waste management company Energesman is preparing to file a lawsuit seeking over 20 million euros in damages following the Vilnius Waste Management Center's (VAATC) takeover of the plant's operations. The Vilnius municipality, through Mayor Valdas Benkunskas, announced its own claim against Energesman would be even larger.

The losses are growing due to other methods of managing waste.

Mayor Benkunskas explained that the municipality's mounting losses stem from the necessity of employing alternative waste management methods. He assured residents that waste collection services in the Vilnius region have continued without interruption and that prices will not increase due to the dispute.

The Vilnius District Court previously prohibited Energesman from obstructing VAATC's access to the plant premises, paving the way for the center to assume control. Energesman intends to appeal this court decision, asserting that VAATC terminated their contract without valid grounds.

Mayor Benkunskas expressed his belief that VAATC should continue managing the facility, arguing that state and municipal institutions are better equipped to handle sensitive public services like waste management. The court's intervention and subsequent takeover by VAATC mark a significant escalation in the conflict over the waste treatment plant's operations.
