Vinh Long orders crackdown on illegal bird hunting at Hai Chìa sanctuary

Authorities in Vietnam's Vĩnh Long province have issued a stern directive to crack down on the illegal hunting of wild birds, with a specific focus on protecting the Hai Chìa bird garden, a sanctuary managed by an 80-year-old local resident. The provincial People's Committee has called for strict adherence to wildlife protection laws, emphasizing the need to safeguard biodiversity.

The provincial government is tasking the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to lead efforts in raising public awareness about wildlife management and biodiversity. This includes educating citizens against the illegal hunting, capture, trading, transportation, and consumption of endangered, rare, and migratory bird species. The department will also monitor wildlife populations and assess environmental conditions to support the conservation and potential expansion of the Hai Chìa bird garden.

Furthermore, the provincial leadership has mandated severe penalties for any individuals involved in illegal activities related to wild animals. The provincial police are instructed to proactively identify and address potential violations of wildlife protection laws. The Hai Chìa bird garden, spanning over 2.64 hectares, is home to an estimated 2,000 pied herons and various other wild bird species. The owner, Mr. Lê Văn Chìa, has expressed concerns over recent incidents of birds being shot and injured, citing difficulties in managing and protecting the garden due to his age and requesting increased patrols and stricter enforcement against illegal hunting.
