Viorel Pașca, after the seizure decision is postponed: 'I live on the mercy of people'

A Romanian court has postponed a decision regarding a freeze order exceeding 6 million euros placed on the assets and bank accounts of Viorel Pașca and his family. The Tribunalul Bihor delayed its ruling on the defense's challenges until July 31.

Viorel Pașca, who maintains his innocence, stated that he is now "living on the mercy of people." He asserted that after two decades as a leader of a criminal group, as alleged by investigators, he possesses nothing. "They haven't found money on me, they haven't found money in my accounts, and now I live on the mercy of people," Pașca told reporters. "They haven't found, and never will find, because there was no money or other assets."

Pașca's lawyer, Răzvan Doseanu, explained that the defense contests all asset freezes. These measures are intended to recover alleged damages and for extended confiscation, as well as to cover moral damages estimated at approximately 6.4 million euros. Doseanu criticized prosecutors for calculating uniform compensation for 128 individuals without analyzing each case separately, arguing that "people are not screws, so that each costs 500 euros."

The defense also contends that the case does not definitively identify victims of human trafficking, referring to them only as "presumed victims" yet to be identified. The defense seeks the lifting of all asset freezes, arguing that depriving individuals of all income leaves them destitute. "It's not normal to deprive so many people of any income, to leave them effectively without a single leu, neither in cash nor in account," the lawyer stated. He added that the Pașca family faces difficulties, including transportation to Bucharest for hearings, due to the asset freeze.
