Viral Cleaning Hack Using Dishwasher Tablets Can Damage Wooden Floors, Experts Warn

A popular cleaning hack circulating online, which involves using a dishwasher tablet dissolved in hot water, could cause significant damage to wooden floors, according to experts. This method is promoted as a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to clean various surfaces.

The technique suggests creating a potent cleaning agent capable of tackling tough grime on ovens, grates, and baseboards. However, specialists warn that applying this solution to certain surfaces, particularly wood, can lead to more harm than good. The strong cleaning agents found in dishwasher tablets are designed for the high temperatures and specific conditions inside a machine, not for delicate floor finishes.

Lukas Lar, director and wood technology engineer, strongly advises against using this method on wooden surfaces. He explains that dishwasher tablets contain powerful chemicals, including bleach and strong detergents, which can strip away the protective layers like varnish, oil, or wax that shield wooden floors from daily wear and tear. Repeated use can weaken these layers, making the floor appear worn prematurely and potentially leading to costly refinishing.

Furthermore, the hack often involves using a large amount of water, which is detrimental to wooden floors. Excessive moisture can seep into the wood and its joints, causing swelling and damage. Experts emphasize that while the initial cost savings of this hack might seem appealing, the potential for expensive repairs makes it a risky choice for maintaining the integrity and appearance of wooden flooring.
