“Viva Mexico”: Asunción to host a festival of food and culture this Sunday

Food, history and culture will come together this Sunday in Asunción at the “Viva Mexico” festival, organized by the Mexican Embassy in Paraguay. The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 6 at Plaza Infante Rivarola, with free admission, as part of celebrations marking the 216th anniversary of Mexico’s independence.

Mexican entrepreneurs will serve tacos, tortas, chilaquiles, tamales, nachos, sopes and Mexican pastries. Organizers said the dishes will not include chili unless diners choose to add it. Music and contests will also be part of the family event, with participation from Xochimilco, Ayoök, El Nopal, Auténtico Sabor Mexicano, El Rey de Mil Coronas, Paso a Paso, El Tortillas and Dulce Raíz.

The embassy has planned other events for the celebration. On Sept. 19, the “Mexican Fiesta” concert will take place at Asunción’s Municipal Theater, featuring Pablo Simón, Andrea Valobra, the Paraguayan Juan Gabriel, Lidia González, Juan Pablo Fernández, Lucho Maldonado, Vivi Talavera and Salvador García, alongside the Spirit and Sound Orchestra conducted by Sergio Cuquejo.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. and feature songs by major Mexican artists including Juan Gabriel and Alejandro Fernández. Tickets cost 50,000 guaraníes. On Sept. 24, the embassy will open Espacio México at the Punto Divertido Cultural Center and donate the “25 for 25” collection, published by Mexico’s Fondo de Cultura Económica.
