Vox party asks for Morocco's exclusion from 2030 World Cup hosting

Spain's far-right Vox party has formally requested the exclusion of Morocco as a co-host for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The party submitted a proposal to the Spanish parliament, citing the recent surge in migration to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta as the primary reason for their demand.

Vox argued that the large influx of migrants from Morocco into Ceuta raises serious questions about Rabat's ability to ensure the security and control necessary for an event of the World Cup's magnitude. The party's proposal, however, is unlikely to pass, as FIFA holds the ultimate decision-making power regarding host selection.

Adding to the political pressure, left-wing parties Podemos and Sumar also expressed reservations about co-hosting with Morocco. They characterized Morocco as a "dictatorship" that exploits "desperate people for its geopolitical interests." This opposition from across the political spectrum highlights the complex geopolitical and social issues intertwined with the World Cup bid.

FIFA officially approved the joint bid from Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in late 2024. Historically, no World Cup hosting rights have ever been revoked after being granted, even amidst controversies surrounding previous editions, such as Qatar's 2022 hosting. FIFA has stated that decisions regarding specific match allocations, such as the final, are still pending and will be made in due course.
