Wacken Open Air Kicks Off 35th Edition with Lower Beer Prices and Improved Infrastructure

The Wacken Open Air (W:O:A), Germany's renowned heavy metal festival, is set to commence its 35th iteration on Wednesday, drawing an estimated 85,000 music enthusiasts to the small village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein. This annual event marks a traditional closing point for Germany's festival season.

In a gesture to its dedicated fanbase, the festival organizers have announced a reduction in the beer price. A liter of beer now costs 13.80 euros, a decrease of 70 cents. For the 0.5-liter serving, this translates to a 35-cent saving, a move described by festival founder Thomas Jensen as a signal to fans, ensuring nothing hinders a proper party.

The festival boasts a diverse lineup representing the breadth of the metal genre, with confirmed performances from major acts such as Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Powerwolf, Hämatom, In Flames, Saxon, Heavysaurus, Uli Jon Roth, Arch Enemy, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Rose Tattoo across its eight stages.

Addressing challenges faced in previous years, particularly the heavy rainfall in 2023 that submerged parts of the festival grounds, organizers have invested significantly in infrastructure improvements. Notably, an 850-meter gravel path has been constructed, primarily to facilitate access for emergency services. This substantial investment, exceeding half a million euros, aims to mitigate issues caused by adverse weather conditions.

Meteorological forecasts predict favorable weather for the initial days, with temperatures expected to reach up to 30 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and potentially higher on Thursday. However, there is an increasing possibility of thunderstorms from Thursday afternoon onwards, with Friday and the early hours of Saturday also potentially seeing showers and storms. The weather is expected to become calmer and drier by Saturday.
