WADA symposium in Lima gathers Americas sports leaders on anti-doping

Authorities, experts, and representatives from sports federations and Olympic committees are gathering in Lima, Peru, for the 2026 Americas Regional Symposium hosted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The two-day event, held at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL), focuses on analyzing the key changes and requirements that will take effect with the 2027 World Anti-Doping Code. Organizers also aim to foster the sharing of experiences, build capacity, and promote alliances among sports and anti-doping organizations throughout the region.

During the opening ceremony, Renzo Manyari, president of the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP), emphasized the symposium's importance for "strengthening clean sport" in the Americas. "The fight against doping is a commitment of all of society, because it represents the defense of ethics, transparency, and fair play. For the Peruvian Olympic Committee, it is an honor to receive in Lima those who work for clean and integral sport," he stated.

Notable attendees at the opening included WADA's Director General Olivier Niggli and Director of Legal Affairs Julien Sieveking, alongside César Legrand, general manager of the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD); Luisa Villar, president of the Peruvian Paralympic Committee; and Adriana Taboza, president of the Brazilian Anti-Doping Authority.

The symposium's convening in Lima underscores Peru's commitment to clean sport and holds particular significance as the country prepares to host the upcoming Pan American and Parapan American Games Lima 2027. The event brings together a diverse group of participants, including sports officials, anti-doping specialists, Olympic committee members, sports federations, athletes, and government officials from across the Americas.
