WAEC disowns list of 50 schools with withheld WASSCE results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially dismissed a circulating social media letter that falsely claimed the withholding of results for candidates from 50 secondary schools in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). WAEC issued a public clarification via its official X account on Wednesday, urging members of the public to disregard the fabricated document.

The forged letter, purportedly dated August 2, 2026, was addressed to secondary school heads across Nigeria. It alleged that examination malpractice led to the withholding of results for candidates in the listed schools and demanded detailed reports within 14 days. The fake document included a list of schools from various states and was falsely signed in the name of Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria National Office, complete with a counterfeit letterhead and stamps.

WAEC shared an image of the fraudulent letter, prominently stamped "FAKE," to emphasize its inauthenticity. This announcement follows WAEC's recent release of the 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE results for school candidates. During the results release, the council disclosed that it had withheld the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 percent of the total 1,950,726 who sat the examination.

The withheld results are attributed to various examination malpractices, including the use of mobile phones in examination halls despite a ban and instances of organized cheating. WAEC also confirmed the arrest of supervisors and invigilators found aiding malpractice, who will face disciplinary actions through their respective state ministries of education.
