Nigeria's Super Falcons are setting their sights on retaining the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title and securing a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. Head coach Justin Madugu declared the team's mission is clear as they prepare to face tournament debutants Malawi in their opening match.

Madugu expressed confidence in his squad's readiness, emphasizing their focus on achieving their objectives. Despite Nigeria being record 10-time African champions and favorites, Madugu cautioned against underestimating Malawi. He described the debutants as a quality side deserving of respect. "They are debutants in the WAFCON, but they are a very good side," he said. "We’re not taking any team for granted because you need to respect everybody that has qualified for this competition."

The coach also welcomed the expansion of the WAFCON to 16 teams, viewing it as a significant step for women's football development across Africa. He believes the larger tournament offers more opportunities for players to showcase their talent. However, Madugu stressed the need for continued investment in player welfare, coaching, and infrastructure to sustain the sport's growth on the continent. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade echoed the coach's sentiments, stating that securing three points against Malawi is the primary goal, prioritizing victory over attractive play alone.
