Wagenknecht Rejects AfD Leader's Offer for Thuringia Minister-President Role

Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of the new party BSW (Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht), has firmly rejected an offer from Björn Höcke, the leader of the AfD in Thuringia, to become the state's minister-president. Höcke had proposed that Wagenknecht could assume the role with the support of AfD votes, even before the upcoming state election in Saxony-Anhalt. Wagenknecht dismissed the offer, stating, "The office of Thuringia's minister-president is not a challenge trophy that Mr. Höcke can award at will." Wagenknecht's rejection highlights a complex political landscape in Thuringia, where the BSW is currently part of a coalition government with the CDU and SPD. However, the combined seats of the AfD and BSW in the state parliament create a hypothetical majority. The Thuringian constitution allows for a minister-president to be elected even if they are not a member of the parliament, a provision that could apply to Wagenknecht.

While rejecting Höcke's specific offer, Wagenknecht agreed with his assessment that Mario Voigt, the current minister-president, has lost confidence and that the BSW in Thuringia must withdraw its support. This stance appears to contradict the Thuringian BSW state association's previous exclusion of cooperation with the AfD and its continued participation in the government with the CDU and SPD. Wagenknecht suggested that many BSW members in the Thuringian state parliament oppose the federal leadership's direction and would not vote for her, implying internal party dissent regarding cooperation with the AfD.
