Warm welcome in Kyiv: Zelenskyy embraces Trump envoys as peace talks continue

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, bringing Donald Trump’s peace initiative to the Ukrainian capital after a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The visit marked the U.S. envoys’ first official trip to Ukraine as part of the peace negotiations. They reached Kyiv one day after spending more than three hours with the Russian president. U.S. officials said the Moscow meeting addressed concrete plans for the next steps toward a possible peace agreement, but no details were released and the talks produced no major tangible breakthrough.

Trump said before the trip that Witkoff and Kushner were carrying a proposal to end the war and argued that an agreement might be possible. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready for constructive discussions.

European national security advisers from Britain, France and Germany took part in part of the Kyiv talks. In Moscow, Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov described the earlier discussions as constructive, open and useful, saying the American side had presented several ideas for reaching a settlement. He said the participants had also discussed possible economic projects between the United States and Russia.

The latest diplomatic effort comes as the war has continued for more than four and a half years, with attacks ongoing despite Washington’s attempts to bring Moscow and Kyiv closer to a possible agreement.
