Warsaw Hospital Converts Patient Rooms to Doctors' Offices Amid Oversight Promises

In a controversial move, two patient rooms on the surgery ward at Warsaw's Southern Hospital have been eliminated to create new office spaces for medical personnel. One room, previously accommodating three patients, has been transformed into a training room for staff. The second room, which housed two patients, is being converted into an office for the deputy head of the surgery department.

These changes have drawn criticism, particularly as they come despite assurances from Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski regarding increased oversight of the hospital. Critics, including a hospital employee who spoke to the portal Zero.pl, argue that reducing patient capacity is counterproductive, especially during a healthcare crisis. The ward already reportedly has sufficient administrative and social spaces, including the head physician's office, a secretariat, a doctor's lounge, and a duty room.

The reorganization is reportedly spearheaded by the head of the surgery department, Dr. Piotr Szenk, who also holds positions at another hospital and in private practice. According to reports, Dr. Szenk believes the hospital's original architectural plan allocated excessive space for patients while neglecting the needs of the medical staff for adequate office facilities. This decision to repurpose patient rooms allegedly received approval from the hospital's management.

The situation at Southern Hospital has been under scrutiny, with previous reports highlighting a different instance where a patient room was allegedly adapted for use by an unqualified doctor. Mayor Trzaskowski has publicly stated that his office will implement strict oversight of patient room usage in municipal hospitals following an audit, emphasizing that no hospital spaces, especially those designated for beds, should lack proper control.
