Warsaw hospital faces probes over alleged fraud, preferential treatment, and patient deaths

Warsaw's Southern Hospital is embroiled in scandal following revelations of significant irregularities, prompting criminal investigations and a shake-up of its leadership. At the center of the controversy is Dawid Kacprzyk, a 28-year-old who, despite lacking specialization, served as the emergency room coordinator and reportedly earned 1.6 million PLN in 2025.

Further allegations suggest that politicians from the Civic Coalition (KO) received preferential treatment at the hospital under Kacprzyk's coordination. Following these reports, Kacprzyk resigned from KO and his position as a district councilor, returning 500,000 PLN to the hospital. In response, the Mayor of Warsaw dismissed the hospital's board and supervisory council, appointing Aneta Gomółka-Siembora as the new board president.

Two criminal investigations are underway: one concerning fraud exceeding half a million PLN, and another investigating the abuse of power by a public official. Prosecutors are also scrutinizing whether Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski was aware of the hospital's alleged misconduct. The State Labour Inspectorate (PIP) will also examine the facility.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, former hospital chief surgeon Dr. Emil Jędrzejewski claimed in an interview that medical procedures at the Southern Hospital's emergency room were flawed, leading to complications and patient deaths. He also alleged that medical documentation was falsified. Kacprzyk has denied these claims and threatened legal action against Jędrzejewski.

Recent reports also highlight irregularities in the hospital's prosectorium, where the head allegedly promoted a business partner's funeral home and hindered families seeking services from competing establishments. These revelations have drawn criticism from Adrian Zandberg, who decried the appointment of individuals to supervisory boards for personal gain.
