Warsaw Uprising Museum to mark 82nd anniversary with focus on contemporary relevance

The Museum of the Warsaw Uprising is preparing to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising on August 1st. The museum's director, Jan Ołdakowski, emphasized the institution's ongoing effort to translate the historical events of 82 years ago into a language that resonates with contemporary audiences.

"We talk practically every year. Do you not feel routine after 22 years?" Ołdakowski was asked. He responded, "No, because we always refer to what is currently happening in the world. At the Museum, we try to translate the Warsaw Uprising into contemporary language. In this sense, we are translators – we talk about what happened 82 years ago to the most demanding group of recipients, namely the contemporaries of the then insurgents."

Ołdakowski noted that today's youth are often surprised and feel deceived by reality, as things did not turn out as they expected. They also harbor fears about war, making the museum's role in contextualizing historical struggles particularly relevant.

This year's commemoration includes a special performance interpreting the poetry of Anna Świrszczyńska and the prose of Miron Białoszewski. Additionally, a scout rally named 'Memory Begins With You' will be held at the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising in Warsaw, opening the commemorative events.
