Was Xi’s stand on China-North Korea military ties also a message for US, Russia?

Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent visit to North Korea saw a significant emphasis on military and security cooperation, signaling a potential shift in the strategic relationship between Beijing and Pyongyang. During his meeting with Kim Jong-un, Xi called for enhanced exchanges in diplomacy, law enforcement, and military affairs, according to state news agency Xinhua.

However, a notable departure from Xi's previous visit in 2019 was the omission of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula from the joint statements. This suggests a potential recalibration of priorities, with a stronger focus on bilateral security rather than the complete dismantling of North Korea's nuclear program.

The summit was also distinguished by the presence of high-level defense officials from both sides. Xi was accompanied by Defense Minister Dong Jun, and Kim was joined by his defense minister, No Kwang-chol. This marks the first time a Chinese defense minister has accompanied a president to North Korea since 1992, underscoring the heightened importance placed on military ties.

While North Korea's state media provided extensive coverage of Xi's visit, it notably excluded his remarks on increasing military exchanges. This selective reporting might indicate Pyongyang's own strategic considerations regarding the extent of military cooperation it wishes to publicize, even as the overall tone of the visit pointed towards strengthening strategic communication and collaboration.
