Waste dumping pollutes Fiji's irrigation systems, threatening farmers

Farming communities in Fiji are under threat as rubbish dumped into drains contaminates irrigation systems, directly impacting sugarcane fields. The Ministry of Agriculture has issued a warning about the growing problem of waste pollution affecting vital waterways.

During public consultations on the Public Health (Amendment) Bill 2026, farmers voiced concerns over blocked waterways and the resulting pollution. Andrew Tukana, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, explained that illegal dumping allows waste from municipal drains to flow into streams and rivers, creating significant issues for downstream communities and agricultural areas.

Opposition MP Ketan Lal highlighted specific instances where disposable diapers and other refuse dumped into drains ended up in irrigation channels. This contamination not only damages sugarcane crops but also poses health risks, particularly during floods. Tukana stressed the need for stronger awareness campaigns, regulations, and enforcement to deter such practices.

While advocating for penalties for polluters, Tukana suggested a phased approach to enforcement, involving warnings before fines are issued. National WASH Coordinator Toga Vosataki added that effective waste management is crucial, particularly in rural areas, to prevent waterways from becoming dumping grounds. The reintroduction of rural local authorities could help establish proper waste collection services, providing communities with a legitimate pathway for waste disposal. Protecting these waterways is deemed essential for safeguarding Fiji's agriculture, food production, and rural livelihoods.
