Water Factory Advances in Álvaro Obregón; Marginal Collector Construction Begins on Jalalpa River

The Álvaro Obregón mayor's office, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Integral Water Management (Segiagua), has initiated the third phase of constructing the Marginal Collector along the Jalalpa River. This significant hydraulic work is a key component of the "Fábrica de Agua" (Water Factory) project, designed to restore the area's water ecosystems and improve the sanitation of the Becerra River.

This intervention is integral to the 2025-2030 Integral Plan for the Recovery of Rivers and Ravines, championed by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada. The current phase, taking place within the Jalalpa Ravine, one of the main tributaries of the Becerra River, will run from July 31 to December 31, 2026, with an investment of 47 million pesos. The overall "Fábrica del Agua" project, developed with the Tecnológico de Monterrey, aims to restore microecosystems, enhance water collection, infiltration, and reuse, and establish Mexico City's first Water District.

The construction of the Marginal Collector is crucial for channeling the Becerra River's flow and eliminating direct domestic wastewater discharges. This will strengthen hydraulic infrastructure, improve drainage management, and contribute to the overall sanitation of the Becerra, Jalalpa, and San Borja rivers. The current phase involves building a retaining wall, rehabilitating the existing collector, replacing a drainage box, and lining 370 meters of hydraulic infrastructure. These efforts will stabilize slopes, reduce overflow risks, and protect nearby homes.

This new phase builds upon the work completed in 2025, where the second stage of collector rehabilitation was executed. With the commencement of this third phase, the cumulative investment in the project has surpassed 100 million pesos. The initiative is expected to directly benefit approximately 30,000 residents in neighborhoods such as Jalalpa, Cañada, Desarrollo Urbano El Pirú, and Olivar del Conde by improving drainage and reducing pollution entering the Becerra River. The Mayor's office and Segiagua have maintained ongoing communication with residents through informational sessions to provide updates on the construction's progress.
