Water up to the waist: 8 people killed in storms in the Philippines

The Philippines is grappling with the deadly aftermath of several tropical storms and the southwest monsoon, which have claimed the lives of eight people. Nine others have been injured, and one person remains missing as heavy rains continue to lash the Southeast Asian nation.

The fatalities were concentrated in the provinces of Benguet, Rizal, and Batangas, all located on the main island of Luzon. Authorities reported that five people died in landslides, one succumbed to electrocution, another drowned, and one was killed by a falling tree. These incidents highlight the severe impact of the extreme weather conditions on communities.

Across the country, over 750,000 individuals have been affected by the adverse weather. More than 8,000 people have been forced to seek shelter in evacuation centers. Significant portions of roads and residential areas around the capital, Manila, have been inundated, with water levels reaching waist-high in some locations.

The widespread flooding has led to the closure of schools in numerous areas. Ferry services have also been disrupted in the affected regions, and 20 ports in the central and eastern Philippines have suspended operations, according to the Coast Guard. The national meteorological service forecasts continued heavy rainfall, indicating that the challenging conditions are likely to persist.
