Weapons, phones and drugs among C$112,000 in contraband seized at New Brunswick prison

Correctional Service Canada says it is stepping up efforts to keep contraband out of federal prisons after seizing packages containing weapons, drugs, alcohol and electronic equipment at a maximum-security institution in New Brunswick.

Officials found the items on August 31 at Atlantic Institution in Renous. The seizure included handmade alcohol, edged weapons, cellphones, hashish, tobacco, shatter, vaping devices, a USB key and a USB card reader.

The Correctional Service of Canada estimated the total value of the seized items at C$112,150. The agency said it uses ion scanners and drug-detection dogs to search buildings, property, inmates and visitors as part of its efforts to stop drugs from entering institutions.

It has also established an anonymous tip line for reports of contraband and related activity at federal facilities. “These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions,” the agency said.
