Weekend Heatwave to Hit 38 Degrees; Typhoon 'Dolphin' May Worsen Seoul's Heat Advisory

South Korea is grappling with an intense heatwave, with daytime temperatures soaring to 38 degrees Celsius in many areas, a significant 3-5 degrees above average for this time of year. The heat is expected to persist through the weekend, with some regions anticipating temperatures to remain in the 40-degree range for a third consecutive day. Major heatwave warnings are in effect for areas like Busan and Yangsan, where temperatures are forecast to exceed 39 degrees Celsius or feel like 38 degrees Celsius for at least one day.

The prolonged heat and tropical nights, where temperatures fail to drop sufficiently overnight, are creating a cycle of discomfort. This pattern is attributed to the lingering heat from the day persisting into the night. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that the heatwave will continue into the following week, with daytime temperatures in many parts of the country expected to remain between 33 and 38 degrees Celsius from August 4th to 10th.

Adding a layer of uncertainty to the forecast is the movement of Typhoon 'Dolphin,' currently a Category 5 storm, and the configuration of the North Pacific high-pressure system. These meteorological factors could significantly alter the heatwave's intensity, particularly in western regions like the Seoul metropolitan area and Chungcheong Province. While current weather patterns are driving up temperatures in eastern regions like Gyeongsang, a shift in atmospheric conditions could redirect hotter air westward.

Seoul, for instance, is predicted to reach a high of 37 degrees Celsius around August 5th. Although this may not meet the 39-degree threshold for a major warning, the perceived temperature could still exceed 38 degrees Celsius, potentially leading to the issuance of a warning. The precise impact of Typhoon 'Dolphin' on these weather patterns remains a key variable, with its path and intensity influencing the extent to which easterly winds might be affected and, consequently, the temperatures experienced across the peninsula.
