Weightlifter Aznil creates hat-trick of golds for Malaysia at Glasgow

Malaysian weightlifter Muhamad Aznil Bidin has cemented his status as a dominant force by securing his third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Competing in the men's 65kg category at Glasgow 2026, the 32-year-old athlete made history as the first Malaysian to achieve this remarkable feat.

His previous gold medals were won in the 62kg category at the Gold Coast 2018 Games and in the 61kg category at Birmingham 2022. This latest victory also sees him break the record previously held by fellow Malaysian weightlifter Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim, who had won two Commonwealth gold medals.

Aznil delivered a stellar performance at the Scottish Event Campus, setting three new Games records with a total lift of 299kg. He successfully lifted 133kg in the snatch and 166kg in the clean and jerk. His initial snatch attempt of 130kg was improved to 133kg, though he narrowly missed a 135kg lift on his final try. In the clean and jerk, he secured a record-breaking 162kg on his first attempt, further extending it to 166kg on his second, before an attempt at 170kg was unsuccessful.

The silver medal went to India's Raja Muthupandi with a total lift of 286kg, while Papua New Guinea's Morea Baru took bronze with 282kg. Aznil's gold medal is Malaysia's second at the Glasgow Games, following Mohamad Aniq Kasdan's win in the men's 60kg category. The contingent also secured two bronze medals through Irene Jane Henry and para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin.
