West Bank escalation threatens regional stability, undermines two-state solution: Hegazi

The ongoing escalation in the West Bank, marked by settler attacks under the protection of the Israeli army, poses a grave threat to regional stability and undermines prospects for a two-state solution, according to former Assistant Foreign Minister Mohamed Hegazi.

These policies do not only affect the Palestinian people, but also threaten to expand the circle of tension and instability in the entire region, and undermine any chance for the resumption of a serious political track that leads to a just and lasting peace.

Hegazi stated that these actions reflect a deliberate effort to impose new realities on the ground through settlement expansion and the displacement of Palestinian residents. He emphasized that such policies not only impact the Palestinian people but also risk widening the circle of tension and instability across the entire region, jeopardizing any serious political path toward a just and lasting peace.

Egypt's position remains firm in its rejection of all unilateral measures that violate international law and humanitarian principles. This includes settlement activities, land confiscation, and attacks against Palestinian civilians. Hegazi stressed that these continued violations erode the two-state solution, which he described as the only viable framework for peace and stability in the Middle East.

He further noted that the events in the West Bank are intrinsically linked to the broader developments in the Palestinian territories. Hegazi called for more effective international intervention to halt the escalation, protect civilians, and compel Israel to respect its obligations under international law and UN resolutions. Egypt pledges to continue its political and diplomatic efforts, in coordination with Arab and international partners, to stop the escalation and secure the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, advocating for a just and comprehensive settlement based on an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
