West Java DPRD Commission Submits Sunda Name Change Recommendations to Provincial Government

The West Java Regional People's Representative Council's Commission I has formally submitted recommendations to the provincial government concerning the ongoing discussion to rename West Java Province to Sunda or Tatar Sunda. This move follows a working meeting between the commission and a community group that proposed the name change.

Commission I Chairman Rahmat Hidayat Djati stated that the proposal from the "Community of Scholars for the Change of the Name of West Java Province" is a public aspiration that warrants consideration and follow-up. According to the council's procedures, the recommendations will now be passed to the West Java Provincial Government for a more in-depth review and action in accordance with existing laws.

In addition to the name change review, the commission also advised the Provincial Government, through the Department of Education, to develop a curriculum that reinforces Sundanese cultural values. This could involve implementing the Pancawaluya curriculum and the principles of Silih Asah, Silih Asuh, and Silih Asih. This recommendation aims to strengthen Sundanese culture within the education system across all levels in West Java.

However, the provincial government, represented by Governor Dedi Mulyadi (KDM), has previously expressed opposition to the name change. Mulyadi has asserted that the provincial government will not alter the province's name and has dismissed the Tatar Sunda proposal as mere fabrication, suggesting it originated from social media narratives. He emphasized that the provincial government's focus remains elsewhere.
