West Java Records 132 Forest Fires in August, Sumedang Most Affected

West Java's Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD Jabar) reported a significant number of forest and land fires across the province during August 2026, with a total of 132 incidents recorded. These fires occurred across 91 sub-districts and 153 villages, burning a cumulative area of 196.40 hectares.

Hadi Rahmat, a public relations official at BPBD Jabar, identified Sumedang Regency as the area most affected by the frequency of fires, with 20 separate incidents. These fires in Sumedang impacted 21.68 hectares spread across 11 sub-districts and 21 villages.

Sumedang Regency is the region with the highest frequency of forest and land fires, with 20 incidents.

While Sumedang saw the most frequent fires, Sukabumi Regency recorded the largest total area of burnt land. In Sukabumi, 12 fire incidents resulted in 49.20 hectares of damaged land, affecting 11 sub-districts and 15 villages. Other regencies also reported substantial fire activity, including Majalengka with 15 incidents and 25.91 hectares burned, and Kuningan with 10 incidents covering 23.80 hectares. Cirebon, Bandung, and Subang also experienced multiple fires, with smaller-scale impacts noted in urban areas like Sukabumi City, Bandung City, and Depok.
