WestJet cancels 81 flights ahead of possible flight attendant strike

WestJet has begun canceling flights as a potential strike or lockout by its flight attendants looms. The airline announced Friday evening that it is reducing its schedule to minimize the risk of stranding passengers and aircraft if a work stoppage occurs this weekend.

The "organized take-down" of its network means customers will receive flight cancellations. As of early Saturday morning, 81 flights scheduled for the day had been canceled. Customers can check WestJet's website for schedule changes.

The move follows a 72-hour strike notice issued by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents about 4,400 flight attendants. WestJet responded with its own 72-hour lockout notice. The notice period expires Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT, marking the earliest a strike or lockout could begin.

Both WestJet and CUPE have stated they remain at the bargaining table and are committed to reaching an agreement before a work stoppage. WestJet claims its latest offer was designed to be "industry-leading" and address the union's key priorities, but negotiations have not yet resulted in a deal.
