What a showman: Damir Karakaš opens Zagreb exhibition with a performance

Damir Karakaš, known as one of Croatia’s leading contemporary writers, has opened an exhibition that presents a less familiar side of his creative work. The author, recognized for his distinctive style, sharp humor and precise observations of everyday life, is appearing at Zagreb’s World Literature Festival as a visual artist.

The exhibition opened at Gallery Šira on Friday, September 4, at 8 p.m. It brings together a selection of Karakaš’s drawings and explores the points where literature and visual art meet. The works carry the same perceptiveness, wit and sharp view of the world associated with his novels, stories and columns.

The exhibition also includes works by Barbara Jurić, Karlo Sabolić and Franka Vrljić, students in the graduate program at Zagreb’s Academy of Fine Arts. They study in the class of Professor Matko Vekić.

Nevenka Šarčević conceived the exhibition, which was organized in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Šarčević and Karakaš spoke at the opening, offering visitors a chance to explore a lesser-known creative world of an author whose books have shaped contemporary Croatian literature.
