What is the Consumer Price Index? Malatang and AI Subscriptions Included, Doraji and Gosari Removed

South Korea's statistical agency has updated the basket of goods and services used to calculate the Consumer Price Index (CPI), reflecting evolving consumption habits and the introduction of new products and services. Notably, popular dishes like malatang and subscription fees for Artificial Intelligence services have been incorporated into the index.

Simultaneously, traditional food items such as doraji (bellflower root) and gosari (fernbrake), which have seen declining consumption, have been removed from the calculation. This revision aims to ensure the CPI accurately mirrors current spending patterns and the cost of living for South Korean households.

The adjustments are part of a regular review process to maintain the relevance and accuracy of inflation measurement. By including emerging consumption trends and excluding items with diminished popularity, the agency seeks to provide a more precise picture of economic conditions.
