WhatsApp introduces usernames to protect phone numbers

WhatsApp is set to enhance user privacy with the upcoming introduction of a username feature. This new functionality will enable individuals to communicate with others without the necessity of disclosing their personal phone numbers, a significant move for the Meta-owned messaging platform.

Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's Vice President and Head of Product, explained that usernames represent the next major privacy upgrade. "This is a new way to connect with someone without giving out your phone number," she stated during an online briefing. Users can begin reserving their desired usernames this week, with the feature officially launching later this year.

The username system is designed to give users greater control over their phone number's visibility. Newton-Rex emphasized its optional nature, allowing users to choose, change, or delete their username as they see fit. She noted that sharing phone numbers can often be a barrier to initiating contact with new people, whether they are classmates, neighbors, or members of a community group.

To further protect privacy, WhatsApp will not provide a search directory or recommendations for usernames. Users must know another person's exact username to initiate contact. An optional security layer will also be available, requiring a known username before messages can be sent. For businesses and creators, WhatsApp is offering the option to use the same username across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.

Usernames are designed to give you control over who can see your phone number from the get-go. This is a completely optional feature. You can choose your own username, change it, or delete it.
