WhatsApp Web now supports calls without desktop app

WhatsApp is significantly enhancing its web version by enabling users to conduct voice and video calls directly through their browser, eliminating the need to download the desktop application. This long-awaited feature aims to provide a more seamless experience for users who prefer or require using WhatsApp on computers, whether shared, work-restricted, or simply for convenience.

The new functionality extends to both individual and group calls. WhatsApp Web will now offer an experience nearly identical to the mobile or desktop apps. Users can anticipate features such as screen sharing, in-call reactions, and a dedicated tab for call history and favorite contacts. Importantly, all calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, with no time limits or additional costs.

Beyond basic calling, WhatsApp is introducing several other communication enhancements. Call transfer will allow users to move a call between devices without interruption, for example, starting a call on a phone and continuing it on a computer. A waiting room feature for group calls will give organizers the option to approve participants before they join, ensuring a more controlled environment.

Further improvements include QuickHD, which ensures video streams start in high definition from the outset, and noise cancellation technology designed to reduce background sounds for clearer conversations, even in busy locations. This noise cancellation can be toggled on or off within call settings. WhatsApp has announced that these features will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks, becoming available to all users shortly.
