When Daylight Saving Time Ends in the U.S. in 2026

The United States is set to revert to standard time on November 1st, 2026, as Daylight Saving Time (DST) continues under the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Clocks will be turned back one hour at 2 a.m., returning to 1 a.m. This twice-yearly time change, however, is facing renewed debate in Congress, with proposals aiming to eliminate the practice altogether.

The House of Representatives has already passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make DST permanent. This initiative has garnered support from former President Donald Trump, who believes it would reduce operational costs and provide more daylight in the evenings. Trump urged swift passage, stating, "It is time for the people to stop worrying about the clock, not to mention all the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous semi-annual production."

Despite the legislative push, medical organizations have expressed differing views on the potential impacts of permanent DST. Meanwhile, several U.S. states and territories have opted out of the seasonal time adjustments. These include Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation), Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, all of which maintain a consistent time year-round. Federal law permits this autonomy, allowing states and territories to choose not to use DST. The Department of Transportation oversees the implementation of DST across the country.
