The Social Security Institution (SGK) in Turkey offers temporary incapacity benefits, designed to partially compensate insured individuals for income lost while unable to work due to illness, work accidents, or occupational diseases. For illnesses, payments commence from the third day of incapacity. In cases of work accidents or occupational diseases, beneficiaries receive payment for every day they are on leave.

To qualify for these benefits, individuals must have paid at least 90 days of premiums within the year preceding the date they received their incapacity report. The SGK does not provide incapacity payments for short periods, such as one or two days. Crucially, the medical report must include a specific diagnosis of an illness; reports without a diagnosis will not be eligible for payment.

Once an employer reports the incapacity to the SGK, the payment is typically deposited into the employee's account via PTT (Turkish Post) within a maximum of 15 days. Beneficiaries must collect these funds within two months of deposit; otherwise, the amounts are returned to the SGK. It is also important to ensure the incapacity report is submitted to the correct social security institution, as the hospital that issued the report may submit it to any nearby SGK branch. The individual must ensure the report is sent to the SGK branch to which they are affiliated.
