Nigeria's telecommunications sector appears to be prioritizing artificial intelligence over the rollout of 5G technology, despite initial excitement for the latter. The rapid advancement of technology often leaves nations struggling to keep pace, and the current global fascination with AI has overshadowed the progress of 5G.

While the world is captivated by AI's potential, with nations and global bodies issuing safety cautions, Nigeria is actively positioning itself within this sphere. The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has spearheaded the Nigeria's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS). Launched in September 2025, NAIS outlines a five-year vision (2025-2029) to establish Nigeria as a global leader in ethical AI innovation, focusing on economic growth, social development, and technological advancement.

Minister Tijani's engagement extends internationally, evidenced by his appointment as a Founding Member of the AI for Good Global Commission. This high-level body, convened by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), aims to foster trusted and inclusive AI approaches. Co-chaired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and entrepreneur Marc Benioff, the commission underscores Nigeria's significant voice in global AI discussions.

Despite these strides in AI, the progress of 5G deployment in Nigeria seems to have entered an unexpected phase of dormancy. This comes after warnings issued on this page regarding the need for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to operate independently to serve the nation's best interests during the lead-up to the first 5G license auction on December 13, 2021. The auction saw MTN and Mafab emerge as winners.
