Silifke Mayor Mustafa Turgut has been detained following an operation by gendarmerie forces targeting the municipality. Mustafa Turgut, born in 1966, has a background in medicine, having graduated from Istanbul University's Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1990 and specializing in neurosurgery. He served as deputy chief physician at Mersin Toros State Hospital before leaving the health sector to enter politics. Turgut was elected as the Mayor of Silifke in 2014 on behalf of the Republican People's Party (CHP).
