Why Fight Segregation at the Expense of Children?

Compounding these issues are safety concerns. Some children will have to cross three roads with a 60 km/h speed limit, where traffic lights can allow turning vehicles and pedestrians to proceed simultaneously. The author criticizes the resident consultation process as "substandard and arrogant," stating that discussions about safe school routes offer little comfort when practical decisions contradict them.

This approach raises serious questions about the prioritization of urban policy goals over the well-being and stability of young children. The disruption to established routines and social bonds is presented as a significant drawback to the segregation-fighting strategy.
