Why Seniors Need More 'Playgrounds' in Seoul

A year after traditional game activities were prohibited in Seoul's historic Tapgol Park, a new "playground" has emerged as a vibrant center for the city's elderly population. The "Tapgol Senior Cultural Playground," located just a five-minute walk from the park, has become a popular spot for seniors to engage in games like Janggi (Korean chess) and Baduk (Go).

Despite soaring temperatures exceeding 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 degrees Fahrenheit), seniors were observed gathering in the shaded areas of the playground. When asked about the shift in location for their games, one elderly participant remarked that the "hot spots are elsewhere now," pointing to the new cultural center.

The closure of traditional game activities in Tapgol Park, a well-known gathering place for seniors, prompted the search for alternative venues. The cultural playground, situated on the first floor of the Nakwon Building, offers a comfortable and accessible space for the community to continue their social and recreational activities.

This development underscores the need for dedicated spaces where senior citizens can socialize, play games, and maintain their well-being.
