Why you shouldn't wash dishes during a thunderstorm, according to experts

During Mexico's intense rainy season, which typically intensifies from June, experts are warning against seemingly innocuous household activities performed during thunderstorms. Specialists in risk management and public health caution that practices such as washing hands, showering, or doing dishes while heavy rain and lightning occur can put individuals at risk of electrical shock.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States explains that lightning can travel through a home's plumbing systems. Consequently, the agency strongly advises avoiding any contact with running water and plumbing fixtures while a thunderstorm is active. This includes refraining from showering, bathing, washing dishes, or even washing one's hands.

The CDC further elaborates on potential risks within the home. While plastic pipes may reduce the risk compared to metal ones, avoiding all contact with water and faucets is recommended. Additionally, it is advised to stay away from electronic devices plugged into outlets, such as computers and other appliances, as well as corded telephones. Cordless phones and mobile phones are considered safe to use, provided they are not connected to a power source via their chargers.

The agency also suggests avoiding leaning on or lying down on concrete floors or walls, and staying clear of doors, windows, porches, and balconies during a storm. The extreme energy of a lightning strike underscores the importance of these precautions to ensure personal safety during severe weather events.
