Widespread Power Outages Hit Georgia, Capital Tbilisi Affected

Georgia's capital, Tbilisi, and the majority of the country were plunged into darkness on the evening of August 5 due to a widespread power outage. The electricity supply was cut around 8:15 PM local time, and authorities have yet to announce the cause of the incident.

The blackout immediately halted the Tbilisi metro system, forcing the evacuation of passengers from stations and trains. Disruptions were also reported for passenger and freight train services across multiple routes. The failure impacted essential urban infrastructure, with pumping stations ceasing operation and causing water supply problems in several regions. Traffic lights malfunctioned, and mobile phone networks experienced disruptions.

Local media reported that emergency teams began the gradual restoration of power. Simultaneously, a large-scale power outage was reported in Abkhazia. Local energy authorities suggested the incident might have stemmed from a failure at the Inguri hydroelectric power plant, the primary electricity source for both Georgia and the Abkhazia region.

This marks the third major incident to affect Georgia's energy system in recent weeks. The first occurred on July 24, following the accidental disconnection of Georgia's energy system from Azerbaijan's grid. The second incident happened on July 25 due to a malfunction in a main electricity transport line in the Imereti region. Following the first two incidents, Georgia's Security Service launched a criminal investigation on suspicion of sabotage. As of now, authorities have not indicated whether the August 5 outage is connected to these previous events.
